Before the development of modern, long-range defensive weapons, one common military tactic - dating back to the days of ancient Greece - was to launch "Human-Wave" attacks. Wikipedia describes these offensives as "A shock assault of an enemy, in which soldiers attack in successive line formations. .. generally without the support of arms or with any sophistication in the tactics used." Although casualties among wave attackers were usually high, they often found weak spots and managed to penetrate defenses.
