Military operational needs require higher data rates and consequently more bandwidth. In order to cope with the limited bandwidth in SHF frequency band (500 MHz), the two satellites SYRACUSE 3 A and B have been fitted each with 6 EHF transponders of 40 MHz. In SHF links are planned with constant data rates and small static margins (margins around 2 dB) for a high availability (99.8%). Unlike the SHF band, the EHF band is sensitive to propagation conditions (rain, scintillation and so on) and impairments can reach more than 15 dB. So in order to avoid high static propagation margins, Fading Mitigation Techniques were used to adapt to transmission conditions by modifying in real time transmissions parameters like data rate, modulation and coding rate.
