An emerging model of RFID goes significantly beyond mere identification. Future RFID applications will require tags that also perform minimal sensing, computation, and storage. In contrast to RFIDs that only perform identification, Computational RFIDs (CRFIDS) such as Intel's WISP provide von Neumann architectures that are completely reprogrammable and yet rely on a small capacitor rather than a battery. Recent work has pointed out several potential benefits offered by CRFIDs over battery-powered platforms such as Motes.
