Transfusion Alert Use of Autologous Blood

This paper discusses the transfusion of allogenic blood by autologous technique. The use of autologous techniques can decrease or eliminate exposure of patients to allogeneic blood. Although currently the risks of adverse events related to transfusion with allogeneic blood are low, autologous transfusion remains the safest option. Autologous blood transfusion techniques should be used for eligible patients likely to require transfusion but should not be started for procedures in which transfusion is unlikely.
