The effort to meet the demands of business and still hold the line of costs is leading to a dramatic rise in IT sprawl as more and more computing resources proliferate throughout the business, but remain underutilized and too difficult to redeploy for the changing needs of the business. While companies are increasingly employing virtualization and automation to improve the flexibility and use of computing resources, these efforts have not yet eliminated the issues of over-provisioning and complexity. With a converged infrastructure, IT departments can deliver infrastructure services to customers or business units faster, more predictably, more efficiently, and with lowered costs. This paper describes how a properly converged and shared IT infrastructure can improve the speed and reliability of service delivery while increasing IT efficiency and lowering associated costs.
