The Unicode standard provides a unique numeric representation for every character in every language. It is platform and program independent. This is particularly important for ideographic characters such as used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Unicode currently defines over 90,000 characters with room for over one million unique characters. Prior to Unicode, on the same computer platform, several languages could, and would, use the same representation for different characters. Further, different platforms and programs sometimes used conflicting representations. More about Unicode may be found at. Unicode is not used to represent numeric data.
