Using AJAX and SAS Stored Processes to Create Dynamic Search-Suggest Functionality

Almost everyone is familiar with the search-suggest functionality that is offered by search engines and other Web applications (for example, a user begins typing into a text box on a Web page and a box fills with suggestions that update as the user types). This paper shows SAS developers the steps involved in using SAS Stored Processes to develop this type of functionality for their own Web applications. After a brief introduction to AJAX, the reader is given a guided look at how to call a SAS stored process from JavaScript using the XMLHttpRequest object. The paper then shows two different approaches to coding the stored processes behind the search-suggest functionality, each with different implications for data preparation, performance, and scalability.
