VPLS - Virtual Private LAN Service is based on architecture designed to enable Ethernet bridging in the Metro Area Network (MAN) and/or the Wide Area Network (WAN). VPLS is based on IETF RFCs 4761 and 4762. These standards define how an Ethernet bridged network can expand from serving a single floor, building, or campus to serve a MAN and/or WAN. Expanding Ethernet bridging to the MAN and WAN allows network architects and designers to mesh large scale private networks with Ethernet trunking and maintain complete control of Layer 3 and above protocols and addressing schemes. Ethernet Bridging in the WAN allows a network designer to expand beyond point-to-point connectivity and use a single Ethernet access circuit to reach multiple destinations.
