In the last two decades, one has witnessed a profound change in how companies, their customers, their supply chains, and their employees operate. Over this period, companies invested significantly in ERP software and other enterprise applications such as Supply Chain Management (SCM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) with the objective of improving operational efficiencies and business flexibility, and achieving cost savings. However, these systems have been so widely adopted today that they have become commoditized and no longer enables the unique business processes that provide a distinctive competitive edge to organizations. The shift towards a knowledge driven economy, propelled by globally dispersed workforces and increasing degree of specialization means that companies need to build people-based competitive advantage that will be difficult for competitors to replicate.
