When applying for professional jobs, leadership roles and other salaried-exempt positions, follow-up phone calls are not only appropriate; they are usually expected. However, when applying for many hourly positions (both blue and white collar) the water becomes a little muddier. While it is always a good idea to follow up after an interview with a well-articulated thank you letter or email reiterating your qualifications and how successful you would be if selected (not how much you want to be selected), situations in which a phone call will increase your chances of a job offer are rarer.
