HF Radios are important for military communications. IP is widely used and is the basis for most network communication. This paper looks at use of IP over HF Radio and the efficiency of different types of application over IP. The key findings are that: IP can be operated over HF Radio, and that doing so may be useful, particularly to enable support of applications that are only available to run over IP. That most IP based applications running over a HF link will make very inefficient use of the HF link, and that direct application use of the HF link using STANAG 5066 will give much better performance.
