This paper examines the technologies and standards needed to deploy a 5GHz wireless license exempt network. This unlicensed part of the spectrum does not promise exclusive use of the band. However, it does eliminate the delay and expense of obtaining a license. Unlicensed equipment also tends to be much less expensive to buy and install. Today, when people want broadband, they are generally connected by DSL or cable modems to physical cables called landlines. But what if they want broadband connectivity in un-served or underserved markets where wire-line broadband services are insufficient or too expensive to deploy to fulfill the market need for high-bandwidth Internet connectivity? Wireless implementations exist today that address this fixed access service environment.
