XML stands for Extensible Markup Language; part of a suite of "XML Technologies" that are used to customize markup of documents aka semantic tags. An implementation of SGML (Standard General Markup Language), XML is increasingly important as the way to describe metadata and to identify digital objects; it is used extensively in preference files, keyboard descriptions and other system resources. XML elements are described in a document type definition file, of which there are two main approaches, DTD and XML Schema.
