Mentoring, as far back as anyone knows, began when Odysseus went off to fight in the Trojan War. While at war in a far away land, his son Telemachus remained with Mentor. While Odysseus was away, Telemachus became a man under the example and teaching of Mentor--hence the term mentoring.Throughout Europe, mentoring became the basic element of western formal and informal education from ancient times through to the 18th century. It remained in several areas through to the middle of the 1960's. In this model, a tutor taught and interacted with an individual student or a small group of students in a subject area. We see this as far back as Aristotle, when Alexander the Great was his student. When Benjamin Franklin came to the new world, he was mentored by a book binder and publisher. He learned the trade by working and living with the craftsman. Michelangelo was not self-taught, but was for years an apprentice of another artesian. A master of a field did not have classes, but took on students. Up until the 1960's, this was the practice at Oxford University. Other classic universities used the mentoring tutorial method as its educational model. Due to cultural changes and the application of modern educational methods, it fell to the wayside.Mentoring in the past was a normal accepted part of life. Through mentoring, a father communicated to his son what it meant to be "male", and a mother mentored her daughter as to what it meant to be "female". Artists and skilled labors were, mentored in an apprentice relationship. These years in mentoring were considered well spent, for the mastery of the skills and attitudes of a trade was all important.About Tree FrogTree Frog Reader was created with the end reader in mind.
