in 1987, NEC of Japan released an 8-bit console called the PCEngine to compete with the Nintendo Famicom. the PCEngine contained a custom-made CPU, developed by HudsonSoft, called the Hu6280; this processor was a modified version of the 6502, found in the Commodore 64 and Famicom, which included several new opcodes and it clocked at much faster speeds than either the Commodore 64 or Famicom. the PCEngine's real power, though, lies in its video processor: a custom 16-bit chip capable of displaying 512 colours and 32 sprites simultaneously.
