Currently, rural economies are inadequately served by venture capital. Traditional venture capital is concentrated in very few places. While the venture capital industry in the United States is generally very robust, rural areas have not benefited from the activity in the broader venture capital industry. Pricewaterhouse Coopers reports that the vast majority of U.S. venture capital for the 2nd quarter of 2006 was invested in urban areas. Almost 50% went to Silicon Valley and urban New England, as these areas received approximately $3 billion out of the $6.3 billion total invested.
