Research has indicated that there has been a steady increase in the number of location-aware devices and applications and that this trend is likely to continue well into the future. The private and secure transmission of geographical data over SIP/IP core networks is therefore seen as adding significant value to traditional VOIP services. Towards this end, standardization efforts by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), amongst others, have resulted in the development of several specifications and protocols to guide the implementation of location-based services on the internet.
