Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes have been demonstrated to perform very close to the Shannon limit when decoded iteratively using message-passing algorithms. A wide array of the latest communication and storage systems have chosen LDPC codes for forward error correction in applications including Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-S2), 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-T), broadband wireless access (WiMax), Wireless local area network (WiFi), deep-space communications, and magnetic storage in hard disk drives. The adoption of the capacity-approaching LDPC codes is, at least in theory, one of the keys to achieving a lower transmission power for a more reliable communication.
