This paper discusses the role of principles in developing an architecture, whether it is a reference architecture, an application architecture, or one of the other architecture types. Architecture is a complex effort that must balance the needs of the business with the reality of how technology can support it. Principles are fundamental to making decisions related to the design and construction of the architected system. Principles also address the acceptance and governing of IT architecture decisions.
