Many companies need to interconnect multiple buildings within a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) in a cost-effective way. These companies need things like voice interconnection (VoIP); LAN interconnection; the ability to send video signals (security or videoconferencing) from one place to the other. The boxes to be interconnected include LAN switches, Servers, IP routers, Voice switches, Video CODECS. This paper shows how to design a cost-effective network connecting multiple buildings with only two elements: the fiber connection and gigabit Ethernet equipment. A backbone network like this can be used to interconnect voice switches, LANs and video communication equipment.
