Depending upon where the actual data exists, privacy concerns change, as does the regulatory framework governing privacy. Simple things like generating keys depend on where the data is. While there might not be a need to encrypt data that flows between two different servers, encryption would be a necessity for data moving between two virtual systems in the Amazon cloud. Not only are security controls important, but the transparency of the implementation of those controls - for people relying on someone else's infrastructure is a key consideration. Sharing infrastructure will only strengthen the cloud in terms of capacity as well as security. The fact that cloud computing allows data providers to offer self-service models to individuals and organizations has both positive and negative implications.
