Efficient and Reconfigurable Multi-Thread Design of Video Codecs for Multi-Cores
Source: Ittiam Systems
With the gain in popularity of multi-core devices in market targeting multimedia applications from hand held players to HD DVD players, there is a greater need to have suitable multi-thread design techniques to achieve best performance at lowest possible power on Multi-core devices. This is especially relevant for video codecs given their high compute and memory intensive operations. However, since these codecs are normally sequential in their flow, they present unique challenges in redesigning the program and data flow to suit multithreading. In this correspondence the authors provide a design framework called Multi-thread processing Pipeline Design Framework (MPDF) which will help designers to architect a multithread design of any video codec.
