Energen Corporation is among the Top 20 independent exploration and production companies on the basis of its US oil and gas reserves. Energen was facing performance and support issues for its SAP ERP application, which was running on Sun Solaris servers. The company wanted to reduce the total cost of ownership - in particular by cutting its licensing costs for the Oracle databases supporting its SAP ERP application - and to stop the sprawl of servers in its data center by introducing virtualization. Energen replaced 20 Sun servers with two IBM System p5 570 servers, each with eight IBM POWER5+ processors running IBM AIX. Energen virtualized the SAP software environment into logical partitions on the p5-570s, enabling multiple systems to share the same processing and I/O resources.
