Engaging Students in Computer Science Through Interdisciplinary Seminars
Source: University of Mary Washington
With the decline in enrollment in computer science courses nationwide, it is important to consider alternative approaches of introducing students to the computer science discipline. In this paper the authors explore the benefits of introducing students to the computer science field through interdisciplinary application areas such as computer games and social networks. Course details for two seminar style courses offered for first year students at the University of Mary Washington are provided. By presenting engaging introductions to computer science through the exploration of rich application areas, the authors seek to increase the interest of students of both genders in computer science.
