Evaluating Open Source for the Department of Defense

One area where open source and proprietary software differ substantially is in their development, release and usage lifecycles. This results from differences between the two types of software in development procedures and licensing. Before making any Open Source Software (OSS) acquisitions, Department of Defense agencies should understand how OSS products reach functional maturity for production quality deployment. Sun has spent millions of dollars open sourcing the commercial software stacks. The paper has redefined the OSS market and has spent countless years of ensuring the OSS stacks are free of patent issues. Given the millions of lines of code released as Open Source, Sun is considered the leader of commercial open source software.
