Event detection is the primary step in many sensor network applications. An event (target) can not be identified, localized or tracked before being detected. However, this task becomes complicated with the faulty nature of wireless sensor networks. Consequently, techniques for fault monitoring must be provided in order to design fault tolerant detection processes. In this paper, the authors study the event detection problem in the presence of faults by surveying solutions that propose fault monitoring techniques in the detection process. They classify solutions according to the failure types considered in the detection process. Thus, they consider errors on measurements and sensors, channel limitations and node crash.
