When Unix systems conquered market shares from the old mini-computer dinosaurs some twenty years ago, a radical shift towards standards-based software and networking was initiated in server landscapes. While Unix systems introduced a number of improvements compared to mini-computers, they remain to this day autonomous nodes where users are granted or denied access based on configurations specific to each individual machine. This can make it difficult for system administrators who manage hundreds or even thousands of networked Unix machines to prepare for audits.
