As a toolmaker apprentice in New York, Bob Bechtold dreamed of controlling his own destiny. He left to start his own business, HARBEC Plastics Inc. He began by producing machinery, tools, fixtures, gauges and welding from the barn in his backyard in Ontario, NY. nowadays, Bob owns a corporation, grossing several millions in sales. In order to become a viable competitor in the parts manufacturing market, Bob needed automated, high-tech equipment. He applied for a bank loan to purchase this machinery. The bank agreed to the loan under the condition that he attend one meeting with a SCORE counselor. After all, he needed the loan. But what started as a loan requirement became a four-year counseling relationship with SCORE Counselor Bill Feldman.
