HGV Hanseatische Gesellschaft Fur Verlagsservice MbH Develops e-Book Distribution Solution
A subsidiary of the Georg von Holtzbrinck publishing group, HGV Hanseatische Gesellschaft für Verlagsservice mbH (HGV) is a leading services company in the fields of IT, customer, financial, and production services for publishers of books in German-speaking countries. The challenge faced by HGV was how to capitalize on the increasing population of e-book readers, to provide ability to support the anticipated rise in electronic publication sales and also how to supply digital data to numerous sales channels to achieve a wide ranging distribution of e-books. Oracle Universal Content Management (UCM) provided the solution which enabled them to develop a cost-effective and reliable e-book distribution solution. Also, they constructed a highly reliable and scalable media asset-management system for all content-oriented processes and data where publishers could check in e-book files and cover images to the UCM-based media asset management system. This also provided automated meta data propagation from other backend systems to UCM, providing up-to-date data for e-books and enabled HGV to store electronic publications according to the 'Single Copy Object Store' principle, optimizing the organization's ability to locate, use, and distribute the publications. It also allowed distribution channels requiring copies to take files from the master system for distribution. Oracle Universal Content Management was also used to view, collaborate on, and retire e-book content, ensuring that all accessible distributed or published information is secure, accurate, and up-to-date.
