IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller and System Storage DS8100 15,000 Mailbox Exchange Solution Review Program Storage Solution
Source: IBM
The IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) is a system that presents highly available virtualized storage to a host. Logically the SVC sits between the hosts and storage. Storage is presented to the SVC instead of directly to the host. The SVC takes that storage, virtualizes it, and presents the virtualized disk to the host. The virtualization of storage allows for numerous benefits to storage administration and management including combining storage capacity from multiple heterogeneous disk systems into a single reservoir of capacity that can be better managed as a business resource and not as separate boxes.
