Introduction of LTE Technology in GSM-UMTS Networks LTE and 2G-3G Interworking Functions
Source: 3G Americas
This paper reviews key considerations for introducing LTE technology into an existing GSM-UMTS network. LTE is an IP-based wireless technology that will drive a major network transformation as the traditional circuit-based applications and services migrate to an all-IP environment. LTE will open the door to new converged multimedia services; however, introducing complex voice and multimedia applications into a wireless network is not a trivial task. Introducing LTE will require the support and coordination between a complex ecosystem of application servers, devices/terminals and interaction with existing technologies. This paper discusses functionality and steps GSM-UMTS network operators may use to effectively evolve their networks to LTE.
