Introduction to Business Rules: Taking Advantage of Business Rules Management Systems

Business rules have existed since companies started automating business processes using software applications. Traditionally, they have been buried deep inside the application in some procedural programming language. As business rules matured, business users tried to control and manage these rules without directly having to deal with IT, which hasn't always been successful. Using an example from the insurance industry, this paper provides an introduction to business rules and the importance of Business Rules Management Systems (BRMS) in bridging the gap between business and IT.
