Imperial College London is a leading research and teaching institution in the UK. Some of its academics need High-Performance Computing (HPC) facilities to support their research. Given the increasing importance of, and demand for, HPC resources by its world class researchers, the College decided to implement its own in house HPC solution and further facilitate the support for innovative research. Working with Dell, Imperial College built a supercomputer consisting of 510 blade servers based on dual-core Intel Xeon processors. By taking advantage of the blade design for high-density computing and the specialist cooling system, Imperial College created the HPC solution within its existing datacentre.
