Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication systems can achieve higher throughput by exploiting diversity in multi-antenna wireless communications. Spatial multiplexing schemes attempts to take advantage of the increased Shannon capacity that grows linearly with the number of transceiver antennas. One can apply Maximum a Posteriori probability (MAP) detector and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) detector for effective joint signal detection in MIMO systems. Despite the increase of mean capacity, channel fading and noises can lead to substantial detection errors in wireless communications. To mitigate the potential detection errors due to time-varying channel conditions and random noises, Forward Error Correction (FEC) codes are routinely used in conjunction with MIMO spatial multiplexing.
