Linux, Open Source, and System Bring-Up Tools
System bring-up is a complex and difficult task. Modern hardware is incredibly complex and it's not getting any simpler. Bring-up engineers spend far too much time hunting through specs and register dumps, trying to find the source of their problems. There are very few tools available to make this easier. This paper introduces three open source tools that can help ease the pain, and hopefully shorten bring-up cycles for new platforms. SGABIOS is a legacy option ROM which implements a simple serial console interface for BIOS. Iotools is a suite of low-level utilities which enables rapid prototyping of register settings.
