Managing Risk: Protecting Your E-Mail Archives

This paper serves as an introduction to NetApp data protection service call "Cascading snapshots". Archiving is the preferred solution to address application system performance, such as e-mail, and requirements for compliance, legal discovery, and business governance. But archiving introduces new challenges for managing, storing, and accessing this new set of mission-critical business data. As the data moves into the archive, the information does not change. Therefore, the requirements to secure and protect the data should be effectively the same whether the data is a week old in the messaging server or a year old in the archive.
