In this paper, the authors address the dynamic subscribing problem for layered multicast. Their approach is based on MINC (Multicast Inference of Network Characteristics) loss rate measure. By measuring loss rate, it can implement the congestion indication. According to the congestion indication, the system can judge the current network congestion status, and mechanism that they propose can carry out dynamic subscribing layered multicast number. Unlike Mtrace, MINC uses end-to-end multicast traffic as measurement probes. It exploits the inherent correlation in performance observed by multicast receivers to infer the loss rate and other attributes of paths between branch points in a multicast routing tree.
