For many years Capacity Planning has been looked upon as a mainstream technical discipline. Whilst planning the future capacity of these entities is an absolute necessity for the infrastructure growth of an IT organization, many times there is too little emphasis on how the capacity plan connects to corporate and customer utilization of the IT infrastructure. The IT Director cannot align IT's capacity to facilitate the growth of business. This paper discusses the role of capacity planning in the modern IT organization. It will present how Capacity Planning fits with other ITIL based disciplines such as Service Level Management, IT Financial Management and Availability Management.
