Network Management: The Foundation for Troubleshooting

In many areas of human experience, there is a substantial variance between theoretical concepts and applied practice; the same general principle applies to the world of computer networking. No matter how well-managed or effectively designed a technology environment may be, unanticipated issues, problems, and defects inevitably surface, creating havoc with equipment and personnel. In reality, the most dependable notion is not whether issues will arise, but rather when they will arise. Personal resilience and career success rely on the ability to respond to such situations and positively shape the possible outcomes. Building the necessary skill set includes investigation, accurate diagnosis, and potential solutions; the collective term for these activities is troubleshooting. Of course, good troubleshooting must be preceded by proper network management, which is the subject of this paper.
