The promise of unified communications has been well documented by the analyst and technical community. It has become well-recognized as a powerful tool in enterprises' continuous need to improve productivity and customer service. By leveraging the benefits of a common architecture, the requirements for lowering cost of ownership, better scalability and reliability are dealt with by two important infrastructure components, namely Microsoft Active Directory (AD) and Nortel Network Routing Service (NRS). By leveraging AD as a foundational part of the Nortel Converged Office product, the issues of deploying redundant directory, presence and federation services are eliminated while at the same time ensuring that no additional software clients need to be deployed at the user's desktop.
