The non-farm sector, particularly in rural areas is being accorded wide recognition in recent years as a potent instrument for alleviating rural poverty and providing employment opportunities. A number of factors account for the recent interest in the rural non-farm economy. Firstly, employment growth in the farm sector has not been in consonance with employment growth in general. Secondly, most of the rural communities in the developing countries derive their incomes from multiple sources of livelihood.
