In today's computing environment, managing data storage can be a complex and frustrating task. Fortunately, storage management frameworks have been created to help simplify these complexities by providing a set of interfaces that permits the control of storage by third-party data management applications. Enterprises can now plug-and-play applications from multiple vendors and be assured of interoperability and simplified data management administration. Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for Windows Server 2003 is one such framework designed to simplify storage management and recovery. However, there are critical limitations to VSS that can compromise data protection and allow corrupt data in a backup.
