Optimum Threshold for Ranging Based on ToA Estimation Error Analysis

Several schemes have been reported for Time-of-Arrival (ToA) based ranging. Among these schemes, threshold-based ToA estimators is attractive because complexity and computational constraints are often critical issues in applications that require low cost battery powered devices (e.g., in wireless sensor networks or RFID). For these reasons, characterizing the performance for the threshold-based estimator is of considerable importance. Several publications discuss the topic of the ToA based range error statistics for Ultra-WideBand (UWB). Gaussian model for error in the Line-of-Sight (LoS) case and a mixture of exponential and Gaussian in Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) case are reported in this paper.
