Outlook Connection Settings and Status
Source: Microsoft
Connection state determines whether Microsoft Outlook can connect with the e-mail server. The user can specify that each time he or she starts Outlook, a specific state is used - online or offline. Additionally, the user can configure Outlook to automatically choose the connection state or to prompt the user each time he or she starts whether they want to work online or offline. When the user uses the Cached Exchange Mode feature with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, he or she can control how much and the type of data sent through the connection.
