RFID Security Concerns

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technologies have garnered significant interest due to the benefits RFID can provide across a wide variety of applications. Large organizations, such as the Department of Defense (DoD) and Walmart, have embraced RFID technologies and proven their value in improving inventory control. Chances are that at some point in the future, one organization will consider deploying RFID technology in some form. However, before implementing any technology, one needs to be aware of the implications and consequences of using the technology. In this paper, RFID technology is introduced, a brief history of the evolution of RFID applications is presented, and security concerns and countermeasures when using RFID technologies are examined.
