The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is the criminal investigative arm of the State of Kansas. It is responsible for providing investigative and laboratory services to criminal justice agencies as well as preventing crime in the State of Kansas. The challenge was to provide employees with real-time online access to IT systems containing criminal justice information such as arrest, conviction and fingerprint records and to ensure strong user authentication to these sensitive records, providing a higher level of security than just a username and password. KBI deployed RSA SecurID strong authentication solution verifies the identity of the user with two factors: something the user knows - password or PIN, as well as something the user has - a six-digit code on an RSA SecurID token.
