Scalable Infrastructure for Distributed Video
Of late, video has become a standard communication tool and is used for this purpose on a daily basis. This has necessitated the need to enhance the scalability requirements of the visual communication system. This is so because unlike earlier when visual communication system had to support only several dozen or a few hundred video rooms, now it has to support over tens of thousands of users. This problem has been tackled through distributed video. Through this architecture, users are offered the quality of room-based tele-presence and the usability of simplified desktop video. This paper attempts to discuss the different approaches with the aim to create a scalable, distributed video infrastructure to support the requirements of video-enabled organizations. The paper discusses scalability mechanisms that can even be sued by service providers who offer video services. The paper highlights the importance of scalability that is essential to offer visual communication medium that is not only scalable and reliable but can also be deeply integrated with the core IT infrastructure. Scalability is a very complex topic and this can be made difficult to achieve by any of the components that can create a bottleneck and limit the system performance and the scale of the system. The paper specifically takes those technologies that are capable of handling the bottleneck.
