Server virtualization is transforming IT operations, however it also makes storage management more complex and in many cases does not support capabilities available today in physical server environments. Current x86 virtualization solutions have tried to solve this problem using a file system-based approach, but this architecture forces users to give up many advanced storage management capabilities. Unix-based virtualization technologies including Solaris LDOMs and Zones, IBM LPars, and HP integrity Virtual Machines, are also being rapidly deployed and require consideration of storage management best practices. The presenter of this webcast discusses the state of server virtualization as it relates to storage management.
