It has recently been argued that there is a mismatch between the knowledge of innovation processes and the methods commonly employed to study them (Sørensen et al., 2010). However, while Sørensen et al. suggest experimental methods as the way forward, the authors will in this paper explore and discuss the potential benefits and challenges of doing 'Real-time ethnography' of innovation processes, particularly related to the interactive (networking, open innovation, user-involvement, etc), complex (heterogeneity) and situated nature of business innovation processes.
