Mobile Service Providers (MSPs) are facing a competitive environment that is leading them to look for affordable backhaul alternatives to the leased lines connecting their base stations to the core network. The Alcatel-Lucent DSL Mobile Backhaul Solution proposes to replace the leased lines with DSL connections over unbundled copper loops. The economic benefit for MSPs is clear because unbundled copper loops are an order of magnitude cheaper than leased lines, and the cost of DSL equipment has dropped to commodity levels. Mobile services providers are also entering the quadruple play arena to compete with integrated wire line-wireless operators. For this strategic shift, MSPs need a DSL and Metro Ethernet platform, which can also backhaul mobile traffic.
